This week, talks on the right to vote for international residents in the 2023 municipal elections took place.
The Councilor for Relations with Residents, Doris Courcelles, together with the British Vice Consul, Sarah Munsterhjelm, explained the procedures and resolved the doubts of the attendees. They also reminded residents that all the information is available on The Web.
This year, special emphasis is being placed on the changes that have arisen for the British community after Brexit. The British will be able to vote if they meet four requirements: authorisation to reside in Spain legally and uninterruptedly residing in Spain for (at least) the three years prior to their application for registration on the electoral roll; that they are registered on the municipal register and in the Electoral Census of resident foreigners.
As for residents from European Union countries, remember that they must be registered and express their willingness to vote. These procedures can be requested by Internet or in person at the Resident Service Office (Av Amanecer 2) between December 1 and January 15.
Regarding non-EU citizens, those born in Bolivia, Cape Verde, Colombia, Korea, Chile, Ecuador, Iceland, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobag and New Zealand have an international agreement to vote, provided they have been residing in Spain for at least 5 years. People from Norway can also vote if they have been residing in the municipality for three years.
