The fire in Montitxelvo – update

by Loraine Gostling

On Thursday 2nd November, a fire started in the neighbouring region of Vall d’Albaida around 15:00 p.m.

It was in the municipality of Montitxelvo, in the Font ravine, between that town and Terrateig. During the afternoon, the Special Forest Fire Plan was activated, since there was a risk of seriously affecting the homes and non-forestal property.

The evolution of the fire was complicated due to strong gusts of wind, extending towards La Safor and El Comtat. Various population centres were evacuated: the town of Terrateig, the residences of Ador and Vilallonga, urbanisations of Tarrasó, La Corona and La Esclapisà, also Vilallonga, Castellonet de la Conquesta and the urbanisations of La Ermita, Monte Corona and la Llacuna in Ador.

The latest assessment made by the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, at 09:00 a.m. today (Friday) , states that 2.000 hectares have been burned and some 850 people have been evacuated.

9 units of Forestry Firefighters, 6 fire engines, 3 forestry coordinators, 5 fire crews from the Provincial Consortium of València, 3 fire crews from the Provincial Consortium of Alicante, 6 brigades from the Provincial Consortium of València and one Prevention coordinator. Aerial means from Castilla la Mancha will be incorporated during the morning if weather conditions allow it.

Representatives of the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium told LaMarinaAlta.com that during the night the fire was bordering the province of Alicante. “Yes, it was some “tongue of fire”, so it could have spread wildly at some point.

Once the fire is extinguished, the final study will be carried out and it will be completely clarified if it has penetrated, but for the moment we have not determined its entry into the province of Alicante.
