A floundering shark was spotted on the beach of Les Deveses in Dénia last Sunday afternoon, near the Lamar Restaurant.
Bathers were surprised by its presence and watched the animal from the shore.
Despite attempts by the rescue team of the Oceanogrà fic Foundation to return it to the sea, with the help of Maritime Rescue and the Red Cross, the poor animal died.
The autopsy has revealed that its death was not due to natural causes, according to a statement from Oceanogrà fic.
Its body was taken to the University of Valencia and examined, which revealed that death was caused by three stab wounds to the brain by a swordfish.
“This is not an isolated incident,” the statement said, “There have already been “several cases of blue sharks with injuries caused by swordfish, which has led the scientific community to continue investigating these cases.”
