“When it comes to the law of the sea, it’s not quite as clear cut as “finders keepers.”
Our mayor just announced that police sea patrol have arrested a diver attempting to steal a thousand year old antique amphora from the seabed near Portitxol.
We did a bit of searching to find out why he was arrested as we must admit, we thought that maybe a finders-fee would apply rather than arrest but, as with laws of the land, laws of the sea also apply.
From an article by CBC News, it seems, like all laws, quite confusing!
“When it comes to the law of the sea, it’s not quite as clear cut as “finders keepers.”Whether the treasure is gold coins found in a sunken ship or a crate of goods washed ashore, what’s up for grabs depends on where it’s found and to whom it belongs”
