Out and About at The Caves of Requina

by Loraine Gostling

The caves of the town of Requena, one of the prettiest and most historic towns of Valencia, are a sight not to be missed.

An impressive tour that takes visitors back to medieval times, a visit to the caves of La Villa Requena where many houses have their own artificial caves. They have been used as a cellar, pantry, silo and even refugio .The 22 caves located in the Plaza de la Villa are originally from the Muslim period, dating from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries.

The caves were discovered, emptied of debris and interconnected by tunnels in the 1970s.
Some caves have jars, in others there is a well that corresponds to the old ossuary. They are re-used as a mass grave at a higher level, and two of them are shaped vessels.

Below the caves, there is a network of tunnels throughout the neighbourhood of the Villa.
