Changes and new features in the program

The president of the Nazareno Brotherhood, Vicente Tur, has presented some new features for 2025 festival. Among them is the reorganization of the bullfighting sessions, which this year, as in 2024, will be held exclusively in the afternoons for four days, eliminating the traditional evening sessions and a day of bullfighting.

Tur also announced that this year there will be new surprises during the May 3rd Mass in honour of Jesus of Nazareth, as well as during the Ascent of the Nazarene procession, although details will remain secret until that day.

The rest of the programme maintains the most emblematic acts such as the flower offering, the installation of the traditional May crosses, Children’s Day and the solemn procession of the raising of the image of Jesus of Nazareth to the hermitage of Calvario, which will close the festivities.

History

The image of Jesús Nazareno has been linked to Javea for hundreds of years. The origin dates back to the year 1767; when the religious image arrived in Javea by sea. At that time, the figure was deposited in the old Hermitage, the current Calvary Chapel.

But the arrival of the Nazarene is related to the Dukes of Medinaceli, who apparently gave the carving to Javae. The Brotherhood of the Holy Cross, founded in 1734, was in charge of the image. This brotherhood (of men) begins, in 1768, a year after its arrival in the town during Holy Week.

The religious organisation carries out a procession: the lowering or transfer of the image of Calvary to the St. Bartholomew Church touring the streets near the town wall. This procession is set, by the Brotherhood, on the Day of the Invention of the Holy Cross, on May 3rd.
