Flu inoculations 2024 start on October 14th

by Karlee McGregor

This year the ‘flu vaccinations (and, if chosen, Covid) will commence from 14th October, and will be staggered – beginning with the four priority groups

The first will be the senior citizens’ and those with functional diversity

This is the usual strategy of recent years, although this year the vaccination of children between three and five years of age in more than 500 schools has already beagn.

After vaccination in schools, the first to be vaccinated will be the four at-risk groups, who will be contacted by text message or SMS to make an appointment. Once they have been finalised, the health centres will start immunising the general population.

The four groups

  1. Residents of elderly and functional diversity centres. This will be the inaugural group for the 2024-2025 campaign. This first group includes residents in social and healthcare centres, as well as healthcare, non-healthcare and social and healthcare staff in the aforementioned centres and in the Valencian healthcare system: primary care centres, hospitals and emergency health services.
  2. The population over 60 years of age. They will be given an appointment at their usual health centre. In the case of chronically dependent patients or those who cannot go to the outpatient clinic, they will receive the vaccine at home.
  3. The third group is made up of pregnant women and people between the ages of five and 69 who are at risk.
  4. The four segments are rounded off by a diverse group. These are workers in essential public services, people living with at-risk groups, children between 5 and 18 years of age undergoing treatment with acetylsalicylic acid, people exposed to animals or their secretions, smokers, and those between 18 and 59 years of age who request it. Immunisation of minors.

The strategy in schools seeks to “reinforce the protection of minors” with the aim of “avoiding possible contagion”. They are the first to suffer from the disease. This year, since the start of the school year, cases of respiratory viruses have tripled among children under five since the start of the school year.
