This morning (Wednesday), the province of Valencia is facing the harsh consequences of the catastrophic episode of extreme rain that has mainly devastated the districts of Plana d’Utiel-Requena, Foia de Bunyol, Ribera and several municipalities of Horta Sud.
The worst humanitarian catastrophe of the century in Valencia
The figures, still provisional, confirm this DANA as the worst human catastrophe in the 21st century in the province of Valencia. The number of victims is much higher than the eight deaths caused by the Tous flood in October 1982, and they are close to that of the great Túria flood of 1957, which killed 81 people.
The situation is far from normal. Ravines and rivers overflowed, towns and roads were blocked, cars piled up, transport services disrupted, thousands of people displaced or trapped by water and collapsed houses.
In addition to the great material damage, the authorities have also confirmed that the storm has claimed at least 51 human lives. And the emergency and rescue teams continue to work to be able to access the places where it has not yet been possible to enter.
More than a thousand soldiers from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) have been deployed in the province of Valencia to deal with the situation caused by the virulent DANA that is hitting several regions, with specialised means working in coordination with the device of emergency of the Generalitat.
