In the first 2 weeks of July, Local Police received four complaints against drivers, aged between 30 and 60 years old, for operating a “pirate taxi” service without a licence, in private vehicles.
The penalty for this offence can reach up to 4,000 euros.
Local police officers discovered this illegal activity during several routine checks carried out this month and verified that their drivers were transporting passengers to leisure venues at times of high demand, when officially licensed taxis are busy. Reports for professional intrusion have been issued.
These complaints have been filed with the Transport Department of the Regional Ministry of Infrastructures, Territory and Transport.
The report states that the accused were providing transport services in a passenger car, despite the fact that neither the drivers nor the vehicles were not authorised to do so.
In response to this operation, the councillor for Citizen Safety and Mobility, Juan Ortolá, has expressed his support for the professional taxi sector in the municipality and has confirmed that they will denounce any irregularities detected.
“Pirate taxis” are private vehicles without the necessary authorisation to transport passengers by road. These vehicles are not covered by unlimited liability insurance, which licensed taxis are obliged to have.
Please see the feature below for details of legal passenger transport in the area.
There is an app called ‘Control de VTC’s y Piratas’ that Android users can use to check car number plates for their licenses.
