Partially sunk ferry should be totally removed by November

by Loraine Gostling

Baleària continues work removing the remains of the ferry Pinar del Río from the northern breakwater of Denia port. The specialised companies Ardentia Marine and Varadero Vinaròs, SL, are in charge of sectioning the ship on the surface and removing the pieces by means of a 250-ton crane.

All these sections are being transferred to the authorised recycling plant.

The plan is, that by the bginning of next week, the sections above water level will have all been removed. Thereafter, the more difficult underwater work will begin, which obviously requires a team of specialised divers.

Subesquently, a larger crane than is currently being used (about 500 tons) will be installed, plus a floating platform, to enable removal of the submerged and heavier parts of the ferry, such as the engines etc. . It is hoped that the work can be completed by the beginning of November.
