A change of direction for Avenida del Mediterráneo

by JC Admin

Since the de-escalation phase began during the coronavirus pandemic, the Avenida del Mediterráneo, or as it is known to most people, the Avenida del Primer Montañar, has undergone several changes. From being a simple two-way road with a parking permit on the seafront, to being a semi-pedestrianised, one-way road with a parking ban on the waterfront.

Undoubtedly, a change for the benefit of the environment and the general public, making walking along the road a better experience, but part of the modification has not been accepted by everyone. At present, the direction of traffic on this road is from Duanes de la Mar (port) towards the Arenal beach, an option that has been very detrimental to the traders in the seaside neighbourhood.

The owners of the small shops and restaurants in Javea Port asked, in the meeting with political parties during the pre-campaign, to change the direction of this road. This request was echoed by the Partido Popular, who in the election campaign had already announced and promised to carry out this proposal.

So, now in government, the PP mayoress, Rosa Cardona, has stated that the direction of traffic on Primer Montañar will be changed, from the Arenal to the port. “This measure is because the shopkeepers of Duanes de la Mar have asked for it. Since the change, they have had a significant economic loss due to this fact, since the circulation on Calle Génova and Avenida Augusta has not been solved either. These problems have yet to be resolved,” Cardona told Javea.com newspaper.

Installation of new signage – The mayoress explained, “it is true that after the meeting we had with the group, it is easy to get to the Arenal beach from anywhere in Jávea, but not to get to the port area. There is no clear signposting”.

The mayoress pointed out that from the entrance to the town you can go to the Arenal either along Camí Cabanes or Avenida del Plá, “but if you go into the old town, the tourist is immersed in a series of streets or roundabouts that do not make access to the town centre of Duanes very easy”.

Faced with this problem, the Town Council has already coordinated with the Local Police so that they can carry out the necessary reports and install the correct signposting to make it easier to reach Duanes de la Mar from any point in the town”.

Thus, one of the first measures and promises of the government team that will be carried out, after the end of the summer season, “will be to change the direction of traffic on Primer Montañar, but above all to guarantee pedestrian safety, an issue that we will work on with the Directorate General of Coasts”.
