The DGT has announced that as part of this year’s Summer traffic monitoring operation, they’ll have five drones monitoring the roads from the air, in addition to the usual fleet of helicopters, planes and ground patrols.
The aim is to make the roads safer for everyone during the summer, when 89.3 million trips are forecast, 2% more than last year.
The drones are destined to operate on conventional roads primarily, where 80% of those killed in traffic collisions occur.
One of ten helicopters will be watching over the Balearic Islands, whilst one of the five drones will operate from the Canary Islands.
For the moment, the Minister has confirmed that unlike the Pegasus equipped helicopters, the drones will only be dedicated to traffic monitoring, not enforcement, for now anyway.
